Sayings of Saints (For use on Parish Newsletters, etc.)

“How sweet is the moment in which poor humanity, wearied and afflicted, may remain alone, with Jesus alone, in the Sacrament of Love; for there the Lord, with His flaming heart open, calls unto all, 'You that are burdened and heavy laden, come unto Me and I will refresh you.' Happy are those hearts that know how to satisfy the unquenchable hunger and thirst in this heavenly banquet!” – Fr. M.J. Corcoran, OSA

“The soul hungers for God, and nothing but God can satiate it. Therefore He came to dwell on earth and assumed a Body in order that this Body might become the Food of our souls.” – St. John Vianney

“Jesus tells us that where a person esteems his treasure to be, there also does he keep his affections. Therefore the saints, who neither esteem nor love any other treasure than Jesus Christ, centre their hearts and all their love in the Most Blessed Sacrament.” – St. Alphonsus de Liguori

“If I can give you any advice, I beg you to get closer to the Eucharist... We must pray to Jesus to give us that tenderness of the Eucharist.” – Mother Teresa

“Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament has been the fervent devotion of the Saints. Their adoration lasted hours and hours, sometimes whole days or nights. There 'at Jesus' feet' like Mary of Bethany (Luke 10:39), keeping Him fond and intimate company, absorbed in contemplating Him, they surrendered their hearts to a pure and fragrant offering of adoring love.” – Fr. Stephano Manelli, O.F.M.

“A soul that possesses the Holy Spirit tastes such sweetness in prayer, that it finds the time always too short; it never loses the holy presence of God. Such a heart, before our good Savior in the Most Holy Eucharist exposed upon the Altar, is like a bunch of grapes under the wine press. The Holy Spirit forms thoughts and suggests words in that person's heart.” – St. John Vianney

“One cannot love without suffering. He [Jesus] showed us this very clearly upon the cross, where He was consumed for love of us. And it is still the same every day in the Blessed Sacrament of the Altar... Since love makes lovers one in likeness, if we love, let us model our lives on His.” – St. Margaret Mary

“Love keeps Him there [in the Blessed Sacrament] as a victim completely and perpetually delivered over to sacrifice for the glory of the Father and for our salvation. Unite yourself with Him, then, in all that you do. Refer everything to His glory. Set up your abode in this loving Heart of Jesus and you will there find lasting peace and the strength both to bring to fruition all the good desires He inspires in you, and to avoid every deliberate fault. Place in this Heart all your sufferings and difficulties. Everything that comes from the Sacred Heart is sweet. He changes everything into love.” – St. Margaret Mary

“St. Luke said of Our Lord, ‘Power went forth from Him and healed all’ (Luke 6:19). How many times at Lourdes has this not again proved true of Our Savior in the Eucharist? How many bodies have been healed by this kind Lord, veiled within the white Host? How many people, who were suffering from sickness or from poverty, have there not been who have received, with the Eucharistic Bread, the bread of health, of strength and aid for other needs?” – Fr. Stephano Manelli, O.F.M.

“The greatest love story of all time is contained in a tiny white Host.” – Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen

“Everyday, Jesus humbles Himself just as He did when He came from His heavenly throne into the Virgin's womb; everyday He comes to us and lets us see Him in abjection, when He descends from the bosom of the Father into the hands of the priest at the altar. He shows Himself to us in this sacred bread just as He once appeared to His apostles in real flesh. With their own eyes they saw only His flesh, but they believed that He was God, because they contemplated Him with the eyes of the spirit. We too, with our own eyes, see only bread and wine; but we see further and firmly believe that this is His most holy Body and Blood, living and true.” – St. Francis of Assisi

“A visit to the Blessed Sacrament declares at once the simple, hearty, practical belief in the real presence of Christ, a plain conviction, a meeting with God face to face.” – Cardinal Wiseman

“The Blessed Sacrament is that Presence which makes a Catholic Church different from every other place in the world; which makes it, as no other place can be, holy." – Cardinal Newman

“Keep seeking Jesus in the Eucharist, and you will live with Him as the Most Holy Virgin did in Nazareth.” – St. Teresa of the Andes

“A God-Man present in this sacrament for me! What a comfort! What privilege to know that I kneel before God! And to think that this God loves me! Lovers of God, wherever you are, love him for me too. Mary, my Mother, help me to love him. And you, my lovable Lord, become the goal of my heart's desires. Become the sole owner of my will. Possess me completely. I offer you my mind; may it think only of how good you are. I offer you my body; may it always please you. I offer you my soul; may it be yours forever. O divine Lover, I wish all men knew how tenderly you love each one of them. Then surely they would worship you and live to please you, as you desire and deserve. Let me at least live only to love you." – Unknown author

“Evangelisation through the Eucharist, in the Eucharist, and from the Eucharist – these are three inseparable aspects of how the Church lives the mystery of Christ and fulfils her mission of communicating it to all people.... In addition to the preaching of the message, the consummation of evangelisation consists in the building up of the Church, which has no real existence without the sacramental life culminating in the Blessed Eucharist.” – Pope John Paul II

“If we really loved the good God, we should make it our joy and happiness to come and spend a few moments to adore him, and ask him for the grace of forgiveness; and we should regard those moments as the happiest in our lives. Oh! How sweet and consoling are moments spent with the God of goodness. Are you in sorrow? Come and cast yourself at his feet and you will feel quite consoled. Are you despised by the world? Come here and you will find a good friend whose faithfulness will never fail you... Would you begin to taste the joy of the saints? Come here and you will know the happy beginnings of it.” – St. John Vianney

“...You see that same Body, not in a manger, but upon the altar; not carried in His Mother's arms, but elevated in the priest's hands. Let us, therefore, be roused, and tremble, and bring with us more devotion to the altar than those Eastern kings did to the manger, where they adored their newborn Saviour.” – St. John Chrysostom

“The Birth of Jesus at Bethlehem is not an event which can be consigned to the past. The whole of human history in fact stands in reference to Him: our own time and the future of the world are illumined by His Presence. He is ‘the living one’ (Rev 1:18) ‘Who is, Who was and Who is to come’ (Rev 1:4).” – Pope John Paul II

In his encyclical to the laity Christifidelis Laici, Pope John Paul II repeats the words with which he began his papacy, “Open, indeed, open wide the doors to Christ! Open to his saving power!”

“My greatest happiness is to be before the Blessed Sacrament, where my heart is, as it were, in Its centre.” – St. Margaret Mary Alacoque

“To every soul that visits the Blessed Sacrament, Christ in the words of the spouse in the Song of Songs says: Rise. Hurry, my friend! Come, my beautiful one. Rise above your troubles. I am here to enrich you with grace. Hurry to my side. Do not fear my majesty; it is hidden in this bread to overcome your fear and to give you confidence. My friend, you are no longer my enemy, for you love me and I love you. My beautiful one, God's grace fills you with splendour. Come, throw yourself into my arms; tell me your every wish without fear.” – St. Alphonsus Liguori

“The Power of One Hail Mary can change the world. In all our efforts and endeavours, we can never underestimate the power of prayer, and must always rely upon the help of God. In a special way we commend our efforts to the Mother of God and our own Blessed Mother. The Rosary, especially prayed in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament, is a powerful means of spiritual grace. In all of our efforts to promote the sanctity of human life, prayer is our first and strongest resource. May we rely upon the power of our Lord's presence in the Blessed Sacrament and the intercession of His Blessed Mother to guide and help us in fostering a greater respect for human life…” – Most Reverend Thomas Daily, Bishop of Brooklyn

“Today solemn exposition of the Blessed Sacrament is the grace and need of our time. Society will be restored and renewed when all its members group themselves around our Emmanuel.”
St. Peter Julian Eymard

“If we but paused for a moment to consider attentively what takes place in this Sacrament, I am sure that the thought of Christ’s love for us would transform the coldness of our hearts into a fire of love and gratitude.” – St. Angela of Foligno

“Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament has His hands full of graces, and He is ready to bestow them on anyone who asks for them.” – St. Peter of Alcantara
